But for the other operators its a catch 22 situation they spent a lot of money to roll out 3G and other legacy systems to support voice. Thats what will be the future for sure, a lot of operators in countries like India, Thailand etc are giving voice free and only charging the data due to this technology. So basically Same features as OTT apps with the remote party not needing any new or specific applications. With the added benefit that the call quality would be guaranteed. Voice over Data which is being implemented by operators is called VoLTE and it can reduce the cost of the calls significantly. They lost the first mover advantage and bleeding quite a lot of revenue to these OTT players. These apps like Skype, WhatsApp, Viber etc these are known as OTT ( Over The Top ) Services as they use the connectivity provided by the Internet to make the calls,messages go through.Ī lot of operators are already going in for a telecom network where the voice and the sms travel over data and quite similarly to the services provided by OTT players.
